Wallie Katherine Schwebius 1925 - 1999
Peacefully, surrounded by her children, in song
and prayer, on Friday, April 30, 1999, at the
Ottawa University Heart Institute. Loved and held
very dearly in the hearts of all whose lives were
touched by her, especially her 14 children:
Patricia (Roger Clark, Russell); James (Ottawa);
Theresa (Lorne White, Kelowna, B.C.); Betty
(Brian Rowley, Ottawa); Don (Ottawa); Kathy
(Bruce Closter, Aldergrove, B.C.); Margie (Jim
McDonell, Williamstown); Ellen (Greg Morrow,
Ottawa); Mary Lou (Christian Dobbs, Sidney,
B.C.); Lorna (Cindy Player, Hamilton); Laurie
(Gillian, Calgary); Joey (Tracy Cameron,
Ottawa); Frances (Michael Horgan, Moncton,
N.B.); Christine (Pierre Roman, Aylmer, PQ) and
her 27 grandchildren: Sarah, Emily, Becky, Lara,
Erin, Stephen, Anna, Bethany, Janet, Michael,
Christopher, Devin, Hamish, Jennifer, Kim,
Douglas, Steven, Marion, Chelsea, Bernie,
Hannah, Peter, Joey, Jackson, Leighton and
Calum; and one great-grandchild Stuart. Also
remembered by her sisters and brother: Beth
(Matt Hertz, Edmonton); Martha (late Chris
McRae, Glen Nevis); Charlie (Pauline,
Saskatoon); Hilda (late Al Schommer, Vernon,
B.C.) and Ethel (Bill Cey, Scott, Sask.), as well
as many nephews, nieces and cousins.
Predeceased by her husband, Archie Lawrence;
her parents, August and Martha; her sister, Mary
and her grandson Finn. A registered nurse
educated and trained at St. Paul's University and
Hospital in Saskatoon who worked until her
retirement at age 65 from the Alexandria Nursing
Home, she was a proud and active member of
the St. Paul's alumni group in Ottawa. In addition
to being a marvelous mother, she was an
enthusiastic gardener, a wise philosopher and
advisor, an accomplished maker of quilts, hems
and lovingly crafted gifts of all manner, and avid
reader, an expert mender of all things and
master Scrabble player. A faithful member of St.
George's Roman Catholic parish community and
a tireless lover of life, she took great joy devoting
her time, energy and spirit to her work with the
pastoral care team, the funeral choir, the Catholic
Women's League and countless other church
and community activities. Friends may call at the
Kelly Funeral Home, 585 Somerset Street West
(centretown), Ottawa, on Sunday, May 2nd,
between the hours of 2 and 9 p.m. A Mass of
Christian Funeral will be held at St. George's
Roman Catholic Church, 415 Piccadilly Street,
Ottawa, on Monday, May 3rd, at 11 a.m.
Interment to follow at St. Margaret of Scotland
Roman Catholic Church cemetery, Glen Nevis, at
4 p.m. In memoriam, donations to the Youville
Centre, Ottawa would be appreciated by the
family. Special thanks to the staff at the Ottawa
Heart Institute and at the emergency room at the
Ottawa Civic Hospital, for their extraordinary
care and compassion.
